Arts, Crafts & More Fun for the Family

Take a break from all the entertainment to celebrate your creativity with these family-friendly activities.

On the second floor of Time Warner Center, have fun with performers and face painters from the Big Apple Circus, and celebrate the season of giving with DOROT by making holiday cards for seniors in the community.

Don’t miss Kids’ Central at the American Bible Society, at Broadway and 61st Street, with face painting and  tattoos hosted by the West Side YMCA,  the New York Society for Ethical Culture, and fun wintry sensory tables, a winter wreath art project, and more from Apple Seeds. Plus, have your picture taken at the Time Out Kids photo booth and visit with UrbanSitter.

New York Institute of Technology will also have a face painter on hand at its location on Broadway between 60th and 61st Streets.

Just up the block at TD Bank on Broadway and 62nd Street, children and their parents can get creative as they customize their very own Elf Hat at this popular Winter’s Eve activity.

On west 65th Street between Broadway & Amsterdam Avenue at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, the Film Society of New York will present a free screening of the American musical film, Annie, at  2:30pm, 5:00pm and 7:00pm.

Further north you can meet Sid the Science Kid in front of the Tisch WNET Studios at Lincoln Center, on Broadway and 66th Street! And, get a behind the scenes look at the studio.

If that wasn’t enough, we are lucky to have three Santas visiting Lincoln Square during Winter’s Eve – say hi to Santa at Brooks Brothers  at 1934 Broadway and  65th Street, at Gracious Home on Broadway at 67th Street, and meet St. Nicholas at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle (Columbus Avenue at 60th Street). St. Paul’s will also be screening Christmas cartoon movies for children.

Emmet Cohen Trio presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center

At 22, jazz piano prodigy Emmet Cohen plays with the maturity and confidence of a seasoned veteran. With astonishing technique and an innovative harmonic palate, Emmet engenders a deep musical bond with his audience. He has shared the bandstand with a plethora of Jazz luminaries, including Christian McBride, Joshua Redman, Patti Austin, Maceo Parker, Carmen Bradford, Billy Hart, and many others.

In 2008, Emmet won a Downbeat Award as an Outstanding Jazz Soloist, and was later chosen to be the pianist to play in the 2008 Gibson/Baldwin GRAMMY Jazz Combo, the 2008 Jazz Band of America (part of the Music for All National Festival), and the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2008 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. Finally, he was selected to be a recipient of the 2009 NFAA Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowship, honored with a silver award.

In 2011, Emmet came in first place in the Kathleen T. and Philip B. Phillip’s Piano Competition at the University of West Florida, and also won the audience favorite award. Emmet won third prize in the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. Backed by Carl Allen and Rodney Whitaker, he performed a set at the Kennedy Center in front of 2,000 people.

On Winter’s Eve Emmet will be accompanied by Evan Sherman and Russell Hall.
